Well, here we are at Tuesday and it's still HOT outside. My A/C hasn't shut off in a month and my electric bill has tripled.
Has anyone else wondered why the news of the Alaska oil pipeline being shut down and possibly needing months to repair hasn't sent the price of gas through the roof? Every time some Shiek, Imam or dictator in the middle east makes a threat it causes the oil speculators to drop a brick and we all have to shell out (pun intended) a lot more to fill up.
Could it be that the amount of oil we are getting from our OWN land isn't enough of a percentage to make any difference. I must be since the price of gas has actually gone DOWN after the news stories broke.
This tells me two things. One, that the fickle system for fixing the price of a barrel of crude is terrible and outdated. And Two, that we need to start taking advantage of all the natural resources in our own backyards. Oil companies have been begging for years to be allowed to drill off the coast of New England and in the Gulf of Mexico but NIMBYs like Ted - sure I'll have another, I'm not driving too far - Kennedy have blocked their attempts every time. He just hates the idea of ruining his Martha's Vineyard view by having to see oil platforms off in the distance.
Another thing we should do is ignore all the whiny environmentalist crazies and build more refineries! Our country hasn't built an oil refinery in over 25 years! So now we're using out of date equipment and technology trying to compete with the rest of the world. Also the Enviro-whackos have imposed, through the liberal courts, that the oil companies produce over a dozen different "blends" of gas for the different regions of the country. Ridiculous isn't it? Talk about having your hands tied behind your back!
Some studies have shown that we have the resources and the ability to supply our own oil for the next hundred years. Why don't we do it? Just ask our liberal, democrat friends...
